NLA University College is a private university college with 2,800 students and 280 employees, spread across campuses in Oslo, Bergen, and Kristiansand. In Bergen, they co-own the ambitious academic building Kanalveien 90 with the housing cooperative BOB.
The university college struggled with inexplicably high electricity consumption and lacked an overview of where the energy was being lost. With the goal of creating "Norway's smartest academic building," they needed a partner who could provide precise insights and tools for active energy management, rather than just a cheap electricity contract.
Through Noova's platform, NLA identified significant energy losses that were immediately rectified. In just four months, consumption at Kanalveien 90 was reduced by a total of 207,330 kWh. In March 2024 alone, the reduction was 40%, and the building now has minimal energy consumption when not in use.
When NLA University College moved into Kanalveien 90, they were quickly faced with high electricity bills. The question was simple, yet difficult to answer: Why are we using so much electricity? They found the answer in close collaboration with Noova, who helped them address the energy losses.
"Saving electricity is something we are all obligated to do, and it's a natural part of our strategy," says Torbjørn Hovland at NLA Eiendom. By combining Noova's technology with the expertise of their own operations managers and energy advisors, they have managed to achieve results described as "enormous." NLA has proven that the cheapest electricity contract offers little help if one lacks insight into their own consumption – now they don't use a single kWh more than necessary.
